Event Description

Boaz Katz, "Prom Night"

A One-Man Show at The Gallery of The Department of Photographic Communications,  Hadassah Academic College, Jerusalem

Curator: Yossi Nahmias

Opening and gallery talk: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 16:00

Closing: January 21, 2016

Katz's work combines 19th century early photographic technology with contemporary technology. The image created is the beginning of a recollection of an emotionally loaded personal event, but since the multi-event space simultaneously presents colliding "stories", the photographic pathos is exposed and broken, bringing about the collapse of the narrative of the image.

Boaz Katz, artist and photography lecturer, graduated from the Photography Department at the Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem and from the Beit Berl Arts College and holds an MFA from the Haifa University.

Regarding a few of the works presented in the exhibition:

Image no. 1 and 2

I combine images that diverge from textual narration and entice the spectator to search for other experiential connections; the textual does not disappear but still exist as scaffoldings in the background of the image.

The spatial structure of the image always exists, but since its stability is disturbed it becomes unhinged. The wish to tell the story and take a picture of the experience burns in me as I select photographs or take them myself, but their usage reproduces the inability create a full and stable transformation of an image to a story or of a story to an image.

Image 3 (photo grid) "Mon Chéri"

The use of almost completely repetitive images makes the wish for order and discipline compete with the eye's flickering from the center outwards and back. The building of structures and their dismantling are done through a sense that we are surrounded by remnants of realities rather than by one clear and uniform reality. The aim of all the images I construct is to create a resonance between structural stability and the experience of its collapse.

Image 4 "Man and Building Inside Room"

A meeting of two images that can't be fusioned, the one of the ironing man, myself in an ironic self portrait of sorts inside the camera, and the building and sky projected inwards upside down on the wall and the bed through a pinhole in the window of the room, which functions as a camera obscura.
